My Digital Media Product incorporates the technological platforms “Quizizz” and “Canva”. My lesson overview looks at teaching children what values are and attempting to capture their understanding on how they out rule, “rules”. The idea is to communicate that rules are constantly being broken and when one is broken, another one is made. This results is a continuous negative cycle. Instead I propose to teach my students values over rules which in turn will help one know themselves better and will serve them further down in life. The incorporation of technology can often be beneficial in keeping a child’s attention and it offers a “fun” part to the lesson. I used two different platforms in order to enhance my lesson. Both of these platforms were new to me and it allowed me to discover that they are fairly easy to maneuver around which reassures me. It also makes me believe that students would not have much difficulty using the platforms. I used Quizziz to create a quiz to be done towards the end of the lesson to evaluate the student’s retention. Canva is used at the very end as a sort of project. The idea behind it is to create their own vision board.
For our critical media product, we were given the task to conduct a critical exploration of an event that was covered by the media. We were asked to explore different technologies and put together an appealing multimedia product. With the help of the technological platform Genially, I successfully completed this task. I conducted my project on the topic of the Trucker Convoy 2022, as I believed it was an interesting event that the media covered in multiple different ways and angles. I demonstrated in my CMP multiple examples of multimedia; I provided a slide show with different transitions, used both pictures and videos throughout and even used some special sound effects. The project made me realize the importance of using multimedia as it is way more intriguing to sit through this type of project than a bland one filled with an overload of information. As a future educator, it gave me clarity on the importance of making your work interesting and entertaining.
Our final project for our Media, Technology and Education class was to put together a Podcast where we were given the opportunity to explore the TPACK Model and two technologies. The two technological platforms were Class Dojo and Google Classroom. Class Dojo is a type of school communication platform. It can be used by teachers, students and their families to keep everyone in the loop. It allows for message exchanges, assignment of work and much more. It helps parents understand what is going on at school through the virtual demonstration of their child’s day and the work they are doing. The platform is also known for its “Dojo Points” which is in place to promote positive reinforcement. Google Classroom is a free platform developed by Google, its purpose is to help teachers and students have everything in the same place. Using google classroom you could assign and submit homework; you could post documents such as class notes and submit grades. Google Classroom has also been beneficial to use during the pandemic because of its Google Meet extension where students would log in during remote learning.
TPACK which stands for (technological pedagogical content knowledge) is a model that helps educators evaluate their knowledge to consider how to properly integrate it in the classroom. The model features three different types of knowledge; technological, pedagogical and content. It helps teachers think about their knowledge to be able to better teach their students and engage them with technology that will be beneficial for them. It seeks to enhance a child’s learning experience. An essential tool for educators.
The conclusion we reached was the following; they both have their advantages and both bring a lot to the table. Perhaps a better way at looking at the platforms and comparing them would be by a given age group. It seems more age appropriate and fitting to use Class Dojo for elementary education and Google Classroom for high school education. Opinions may differ, this is just our personal conclusion we reached in our final project.
Furthermore our conclusion on the TPACK model was that we thought it was extremely beneficial for educators to work with. It really helps one establish how a piece of technology should be integrated and used within a classroom environment.
