My teaching philosophy

Becoming a teacher comes with significant commitments and responsibilities. A teacher’s teaching philosophy is a vital component of their identity as an educator. It reflects one’s personal approach to teaching, blending curriculum content with individual style and values. Without diverse teaching philosophies, the education system would become stagnant and monotonous. The richness in teaching comes from the variety of perspectives educators bring to the classroom.

A teaching philosophy evolves and adapts over time, allowing room for growth and improvement. My philosophy is grounded in the values I hold dear, the role of academia in education, and the profound impact that an educator’s personal characteristics have on the learning experience. Two philosophers who significantly influenced my educational approach are John Dewey and Nel Noddings. Dewey’s emphasis on hands-on, experiential learning, combined with his belief that education should extend beyond rigid theoretical frameworks, resonates deeply with me. Additionally, Noddings’ care ethics theory informs my view that the teacher-student relationship should be rooted in trust, empathy, and mutual respect.

At the heart of my philosophy is the belief that education should prioritize values over rules. Rules are inherently limited, as new rules are often created in response to disobedience. In contrast, values, such as respect, responsibility, and empathy, shape students’ character and guide their decisions beyond the classroom. I believe that teaching values from a young age prepares students for a lifetime of thoughtful, ethical decision-making. As a result, education should focus on shaping individuals who understand the importance of values in all aspects of life, rather than merely adhering to a set of rules.

Moreover, teaching is not simply about transmitting academic knowledge; it requires specific personal qualities that enhance the learning experience. Teachers must possess qualities such as adaptability, patience, strong communication skills, and above all, a deep passion for teaching. A teacher’s effectiveness goes beyond academic achievement—it is about fostering connections with students and creating a nurturing environment where learning can thrive. While academic success is important, a teacher’s ability to connect with students socially and emotionally is equally crucial. As educators, we must go beyond the application of academic theory to build trust and create meaningful learning experiences.

In my classroom, I will foster an environment of inclusivity and equity. Every student deserves equal access to a positive educational experience. I reject the outdated notion of “one size fits all” in education, understanding that each student is unique in their learning style and needs. Differentiated instruction will be central to my teaching approach, ensuring that all students have opportunities to engage, learn, and succeed at their own pace. My goal is for students to leave my classroom feeling motivated and excited about their learning journey, rather than dreading future academic challenges. Teaching should be an enjoyable and engaging experience, and it is up to us as educators to make it so.

Through my teaching, I strive to inspire students to aim high, to see education not as a set of obstacles, but as a path to greater aspirations. I aim to nurture curiosity, build resilience, and equip my students with the tools they need to thrive both academically and personally.

Favorite childhood book

Love you Forever

By Robert Munsch

Here is a picture of myself with my favorite childhood book. I had to take this picture for a class assignment when creating a literacy trunk for the book in question.  The literacy trunk was made up of information that surrounds the book and how it could be used in a lesson with activity ideas relating to the book.

You can find the Literacy Trunk attached below!

I thought it was notable to include on this page as it is personal yet also academic. I would love to include the book in one of the future teaching lessons. The story has a fundamental theme that is important to all which is the circle of life. The book has endless possibilities and can be used with number of different age groups.
